The Low Pay Commission is Great Britain's official advisory group for the national minimum wage, in place since 1999. Each year, the Commission recommends adjustments to Britain's several levels of national minimum wage based on their continuous review of their effectiveness. The 2011 report includes discussion of the minimum wage in relation to economic recovery, employment, and unemployment. Always readable and fascinating, without anything equivalent in the U.S., these reports constitute the best education available on the social, economic, and enforcement aspects of the minimum wage.

Domestic Workers Convention May Be Landmark. The New York Times

The estimate is that 100 million people in the world, four fifths of them women, work as domestics. In June of 2011, the 128 countries of the International Labour Organization in Switzerland approved the Domestic Workers Convention, a set of standards in the form of an international treaty The Convention is largely a response to the wage abuse and even torture of south Asian women working as domestics in mid-East countries (see other stories following) but it is relevant as well to domestic American workers who, though receiving minimum wages, are not covered by federal statutes for overtime. As oil-rich Gulf states import domestic workers and construction workers from south Asian countries, the sending countries have sought minimum wages for their workers abroad, with mixed results.  Meanwhile some mid-east nations themselves are wrestling with whether, and how, to set wage minimums for the first time. 2007-2010
